The Hula Binder is a platform for hula schools (hālau), built and operated by Haumea Technologies LLC, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi (“we,” “us”). Each hālau uses The Hula Binder to run its own school — classes, lessons, attendance, tuition, events, and merchandise. This policy explains what information the platform collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. Your hālau controls its own membership decisions and content; we operate the platform that holds them.
Information we collect
- Account and registration information — name, email address, phone number, mailing address, date of birth, emergency contact, and parent or guardian contact details, provided when you register with a hālau or are enrolled by one.
- Hālau participation records — class enrollment, attendance, lesson progress, event registrations, and communications your hālau sends you through the platform.
- Payment information — tuition, fees, event tickets, and shop purchases are processed by Stripe. We record what was paid and when; we never see or store card numbers — those go directly to Stripe.
- Health and safety details you choose to provide — such as allergy information collected at registration, visible only to your hālau’s teachers.
- Usage information — standard technical logs and privacy-respecting analytics that tell us which pages are used and whether the platform is working.
Keiki and ʻohana accounts
Hula schools are full of children, and the platform is built for that. A minor participates through their parent or guardian: registration collects the parent or guardian’s own contact details and consent, dependent keiki are attached to the parent’s ʻohana account, and communications about a minor go to the responsible adult. We do not knowingly create standalone accounts for children without a parent or guardian, and a parent may review or ask for the removal of their child’s information at any time through their hālau or by contacting us.
How information is used
- To run your hālau’s programs: rosters, attendance, lessons, and scheduling.
- To bill and record tuition, fees, and purchases, and to send receipts.
- To send communications from your hālau — announcements, class notices, dues reminders. Text messages are sent only with your recorded opt-in consent, taken with a timestamp at registration or in your profile settings, and every message includes the ability to reply STOP to opt out.
- To keep the platform secure, reliable, and improving.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
Who we share information with
Information is shared only with the service providers the platform runs on, each of which processes it solely to provide their service:
- Supabase — database and authentication hosting.
- Stripe — payment processing. Depending on your hālau’s configuration, your hālau may be the merchant of record for its charges.
- Resend — email delivery.
- Twilio — text-message delivery, for members who have opted in.
- Vercel — website hosting and analytics.
- Anthropic — powers the optional “Ask the hālau” assistant. Questions you type to the assistant are sent to Anthropic to generate an answer; anonymous assistant conversations are automatically deleted on a short retention schedule.
Within the platform, access is role-based: your hālau’s teachers see their own hālau’s records, students see their own, and no hālau can see another’s content or membership. We may disclose information if required by law.
Retention, access, and deletion
Records are kept while you or your hālau maintain an account, and financial records are kept as required for accounting. You may ask to see, correct, or delete your information — start with your hālau, or contact us directly. When an account is deleted, records that must survive (such as payment history) are retained only as required.
Security
All traffic is encrypted in transit. Database access is governed by per-row security rules that enforce the role-based boundaries described above. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat your hālau’s records — cultural material included — as belonging to your hālau, not to us.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes materially, we will note the new date above and communicate the change through the platform. Questions and requests: contact your hālau, or Haumea Technologies LLC, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, via the contact page.
